Goblins, also called Gongs, are a vicious lesser breed of Orcs that infested the caves and tunnels of the Misty Mountains in the Third Age. Descendants of the great Orcs who served the Dark Lord Sauron in the War of the Last Alliance, they fled the wrath of the victors and established their own petty realms.

Goblins and dwarves were known to mine the riches of the mountains and sometimes grew greedy enough that they risked an encounter with a surviving Balrog in the dark pits they worked in. Much as the Men of Rohan rode Horses, some packs of Goblins were mounted upon Wargs and Wolves.

As Sauron's power grew in Dol Guldur under the guise of the enigmatic Necromancer, the chieftains of the Orc tribes of the Misty Mountains rose in answer to his return and started preparing for war. In a bid to conquer the North, hordes of Goblins and Orcs from Moria attacked the assembled armies of Elves, Dwarves and Men at the Long Lake only to be defeated thanks to the intervention of the Great Eagles. The vile creatures crawled back to their holes, with their ranks severely depleted and Sauron's hold over them weakened.

Trivia[]

  • Goblins do not appear in the game but are mentioned in Tar Goroth's entry as well as that of the Warg fur and Great Eagle feather.
