The Black Captains Render

The Black Hand of Sauron (middle), the Hammer of Sauron (left) and the Tower of Sauron (right).

The Black Captains were a triumvirate of corrupted Men who commanded Sauron's armies in Mordor, filling in the void caused by the Nazgûl's absence.

History[]

All Black Captains were once mighty Men, whom the Dark Lord compelled into his service one way or another. Aside from the Nazgûl, they are among the most perilous agents of Sauron and answer only to him. Each of them represents a certain aspect of their master: the Black Hand of Sauron is the lying, deceit and manipulation of Sauron; the Tower of Sauron is his horror and malice; and the Hammer of Sauron is the epitome of power and might. The Tower and the Hammer were of Númenorean origin and were both subjected to some curse. Of the Black Hand's past there are only rumors: some say that he was an Easterling king who brought the Dark Lord the heads of the Blue Wizards as a token of fealty; by other accounts he too was a Black Númenórean and escaped the Downfall with Sauron; a few even claim that he is merely another guise assumed by Sauron himself. All that is known is that the Black Hand is a gifted disciple of the Necromancer.

With the Nazgûl weakened and Sauron concealed in the ruined Barad-dûr, the Black Captains took up Ered Glamhoth as their seat of power and began building their master an army within Mordor. They also sought to summon Celebrimbor - if he merged with the Ring-maker's, the Dark Lord could take shape once more. To this end, the Black Captains attacked the Black Gate, storming the Gondorian garrison and taking Talion's family for a blood sacrifice to lure in Celebrimbor with a potential vessel. Though Celebrimbor did return, something happened that the Black Captains did not anticipate: he entered the body of Talion and together they became the "Gravewalker".
